Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

JLPT is an official language proficiency test for non-native speakers and it aims to test the proficiency level of speakers. The examination is based on multiple-choice questions that assess the knowledge in the following areas: vocabulary, kanji, grammar, and listening. The examination was launched in 1984 and consists of four levels. The examination was revised in the year 2010. Therefore, the present test structure has five levels, starting from N5 (Beginners) to N1 (Advanced) and the test is recognized in every sector. Throughout the world the JLPT exam is conducted twice in a year July and December.

One needs to understand that there is not a well defined structure of syllabus of various JLPT levels. JLPT is designed to test your Japanese skills that can be beneficial for your fruitful visit/stay in japan. Merely memorising the syllabus will not help as such. However, it is advisable to study from a standard book and practice extensively to succeed in the exams. Below is the required competency level for students who want to take respective levels of Japanese Language Proficiency Test (as per the official JLPT website).

One is able to understand everyday japanese and somewhat able to understand a variety of situations

Reading:One is able to understand structurally written news reports, commentaries and so on and able to understand at some extent. One is able to understand written material, follow the narrative and understand the intent of the writer.

Listening:One is able to follow coherent conversations, news reports and university level lectures spoken at a near-natural speed. One is able to understand the essential points, logical structures and relationships involved among objects.

N3

One is able to understand Japanese in everyday situation to a certain degree

Reading:One is able to comprehend summary in news headlines, written material in some specific contexts and understand the main point of slightly difficult content if some alternative phrases of one’s understanding are available.

Listening:One is able to listen and comprehend conversations in everyday situations, spoken at near-natural speed, and is generally able to follow their contents as well as grasp the relationships between objects involved.

One is able to understand basic Japanese

Reading:One is able to understand comprehensions written in basic everyday vocabulary and kanji

Listening:One is able to follow basic, everyday japanese conversations given that they are spoken slowly.

N5

One is able to understand basic Japanese

Reading:One is able to understand typical Japanese expressions written in Hiragana, Katakana and basic Kanji.

Listening:One is able to listen and comprehend conversations about topics regularly encountered in daily life and classroom situations, and is able to pick up necessary information from short conversations spoken slowly

NAT Japanese Language Test

  • NAT Japanese Language Test
  • The Japanese Language NAT test is conducted by NAT Test Administration Committee, Senmon Kyouiku Publishing Co. (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan). Currently it is being conducted in 16 countries. In India, the test is operated by the regional office in three cities- Gurgaon, Pune and Chennai.
  • The NAT test structure is very similar to Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). Same as JLPT, it has five difficulty levels, 5Q being the lowest and 1Q being the highest. Each level of the NAT Test corresponds to the difficulty level of the JLPT test. However, some consider the NAT test to be a bit tougher than JLPT levels!

Advantages of NAT Test

  • It is used by many Japanese schools, employers and educational institutions to test the competence of non native Japanese speakers.
  • It follows the same guidelines as JLPT. The levels of each test are similar. For example, the 5Q level of the NAT Test is equivalent to N5 of JLPT.
  • It is the best way to prepare for the JLPT test.
  • It is conducted six times a year, as against JLPT which is conducted twice a year only. So, you do not have to wait for 6 months for testing your level.
  • The result is dispatched within three weeks of the exam. The report card contains detailed breakdown of the performance, section wise. Those who pass the exam are also given a certificate.
  • The test is created meticulously by Japanese language experts of the NAT Test Administration Committee. These people are veteran language instructors, editors and textbook writers.
  • In order to ensure the integrity of all parts of the examination process, all of the test takers, users and administrators have to agree to abide by the NAT-TEST Code of Honor.
